Producing Affordable English Reading Materials

A range of projects were supported by QUEST in order to explore ways to improve English literacy and reading in primary schools.

During 2002 a team from the Margaret Trowel School of Fine and Industrial Art (MTSFIA) at Makerere University, worked closely with theMinds Across Africa Schools Club project from the Institute of Languages ran a series of teacher based writing workshops. Primary school teachers were invited to attend workshops on writing children's stories and asked to submit any stories they wanted for possible publication. The best manuscripts were selected and then edited by post-graduate English Literature students at Makerere University.  Manuscripts were also illustrated by students at MFSFIA.

The completed books were then printed locally, under MTSFIA supervision. In this way, over 35 new titles for primary school children in Uganda were developed and thousands of copies have been distributed to a wide range of schools.
